Reflecting on the Impact: Parent Beds

Looking back at the healthcare landscape of 2020, one initiative stands out: the introduction of parent beds in children's wards at Waipapa Christchurch Hospital. Funded through the generous support of Māia Health Foundation and the community, these parent beds have had a profound impact on families with children in hospital, offering comfort and support during challenging times.

Prior to the availability of parent beds, caregivers faced considerable discomfort when staying overnight with their children in hospital. "Before we had these parent beds on the children's wards, caregivers who wanted to stay with their children would sleep in recliner chairs or a portable fold-out bed that was far from comfortable," recalls Rebecca Aarts, Charge Nurse Manager of Ward A7 at Waipapa Christchurch Hospital. "We were limited in what we had available, which was not ideal at all for families who are often already experiencing little sleep due to stress, anxiety, and caring for their child."

The introduction of parent beds brought much-needed relief to both hospital staff and families alike. "These beds have brought relief to our staff and to families, as we can now offer all families who want to stay with their child a comfortable bed that is available to them 24/7," adds Aarts.

The availability of parent beds not only addressed the physical discomfort of caregivers but also alleviated some of the emotional and psychological burdens associated with having a child in hospital. By providing a more conducive environment for families to stay close to their children, the parent beds fostered a sense of security and reassurance during times of uncertainty.

The legacy of the parent beds serves as a reminder of the power of collective action in shaping healthcare outcomes. For more information about Māia Health Foundation and its contributions to healthcare excellence, visit maiahealth.org.nz/achievements
