Ātea Whakaora - The Burwood Hospital Therapy Garden

Burwood Hospital, a leading healthcare provider specialising in older people's health, is embarking on an ambitious project to create a dementia-friendly garden within its inner courtyard. This initiative aims to enhance the patient experience and promote healing and well-being.

Burwood Hospital often cares for patients over extended periods, as a hospital with one of only two spinal units in New Zealand. Recognising the challenges faced by individuals with dementia, the hospital is committed to creating a welcoming and therapeutic environment.

The vision is to provide patients with opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and reduce stress, to offer spaces for physical activity and therapy and to create a relaxed setting for patients, families, and visitors to connect.

A thoughtfully designed garden concept will feature a looped walking track connecting various spaces, each with its own unique character. This design aims to encourage exploration and engagement while minimising confusion for those living with dementia.

Your support can make a difference. Every donation, no matter the size, will contribute to the realisation of this transformative project. Your generosity will help create a space where patients can find solace, healing, and a renewed sense of purpose.
