Reflecting on the Impact: Ronald McDonald House Family Room

Looking back at the developments of 2020, one significant milestone stands out in the history of Waipapa Christchurch Hospital: the completion of the Ronald McDonald House Family Room. This transformative space, made possible through a partnership between Māia Health Foundation and Ronald McDonald House, has provided invaluable support and comfort to families with children in hospital.

"It can be a stressful time for whānau with tamariki in hospital. Having The Ronald MacDonald House Family room within the hospital means we now have an oasis for whānau," reflects Tracy Jackson, Nursing Director-Women’s and Children’s Christchurch Hospital. "A calm peaceful place where whānau can relax, stay if needed, and be taken care of by the Ronald MacDonald Team."

The establishment of the family room has addressed a critical need for families facing the challenges of having a child hospitalised. It serves as a sanctuary amidst the clinical environment, offering respite and support to families during difficult times.

"All our staff, doctors, and nurses, are so grateful for everything the Māia Foundation does and has done for our Children’s Services," adds Jackson. "What has been done has made a huge difference for us in helping meet the needs of the tamariki and whānau we care for."

By providing a comforting environment for families, it enables them to focus on what matters most: the well-being and recovery of their loved ones. As we look back on the introduction of the family room, we acknowledge the profound impact it has had on countless families and healthcare professionals alike. It serves as a reminder of the importance of collaborative efforts in enhancing the patient and family experience in healthcare settings.

Together, we continue to make a difference and bring Canterbury Health from good to great.
