Hospital through a child’s eyes

Being in hospital is an upsetting and stressful time for children and their families. Whether a stay is for a day or several weeks, it’s the little details that make the difference.

Māia Health Foundation is here to help create a unique, healing, supportive and friendly environment to make each stay as comfortable as possible for children and their families.

With your support, Christchurch Hospital's new building will include excellent child and family spaces created with wellness, safety and sociality in mind.

These contemporary facilities will cater to children of all ages, with play areas designed to provide the best environment possible.

Christchurch Hospital looks after many of the South Island’s sickest children, and some from the lower North Island. The warmth we as a community can extend to them in Christchurch helps them to get better, sooner.

Children’s enhancement project details

  • Providing a welcoming environment for 18,000 child inpatient admissions per year

  • Socialisation space for teens
  • Glazing in Paediatric ED

Research shows that play as a therapeutic tool reduces tension, anxiety, anger and frustration in child patients.

Child-friendly interior design elements such as colour and furniture also encourage healing, as does artwork depicting images of nature.

Maia will take these research findings and translate them into inspirational spaces for children and their families.
